Web Clipping Software

Web clippers are commercial products that are Internet Explorer add-ons.

Mobile Favorites

Mobile Favorites are built into Pocket PCs. They offer an alternative to purchasing iSiloX (see above). Mobile Favorites will not be able to read Palm Document formatted files and cannot convert more than one Web page at a time. Not being able to convert more than one page at a time means Mobile Favorites cannot place a complete issue of Annals on a Pocket PC and cannot place an entire article if full-size tables and figures are on separate Web pages. To avoid these problems, Pocket PC users may want to purchase both iSilo™ and HandStory.

Placing entire articles on your PDA

  • First, make the toolbuttons visible on Internet Explorer. You must start iSiloX from within Internet Explorer and not from your computer's start menu or desktop. After you've installed Web clippers onto your Windows desktop computer, their toolbuttons and the Mobile Favorite toolbutton should show on Internet Explorer as in the figure to the right. If they do not, use your mouse to right click the Internet Explorer button bar (example) to correct this and to also remove unneeded buttons.

  • Second, when viewing the article on Internet Explorer, click the toolbutton (either iSilox or Mobile Favorites) to initiate article conversion. Then follow instructions provided with the software. iSiloX can be configured to include links to full size images. After the "iSiloX Clipper" popup appears, do the following:
  • Click the button labeled Properties

    • On the Document tab: Set the Page Boundaries to Hard

    • If your PDA has a high-resolution screen and you want to include images:

      • On the Links tab: Set length depth to 1, and select only the second of the three check boxes, the one that says Follow only links that are subfolders....

      • On the Images tab, unselect the Resize large images box

    • If your PDA does not have a high-resolution screen

      • On the Links tab: Set length depth to 0

  • The resulting file will be 500- to 600-kb in size.
  • Consider clicking Default Properties and making these the default settings.

  • Red circle indicates iSilo toolbutton on Internet Explorer. To its right are the buttons for HandStory and Mobile Favorites.

Placing selected images on your PDA

First, you must install HandStory. When viewing an image with Internet Explorer, right click the image and select "Save to Palm." Be certain that you can easily read the image on your desktop computer. If you cannot, click the image for a larger version. Click here for an example. After you HotSync® or ActiveSync®, you can view the image with HandStory (see image to right).

Notes on using Web clippers and Mobile Favorites

    • If you have other trouble with one of the Web clippers, consult the Web site where you downloaded the software.

This is the Centor scale for predicting the probability of group A streptococcal pharyngitis (Ann Intern Med 15 July 2003) . This image was clipped from Annals.org using HandStory (www.HandStory.com). You can view the entire image on your PDA by dragging it with your stylus.
