In March 1981, 72 physicians from 12 countries met in Airlie, Virginia at the First Congress of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. A summary of the proceedings of that Congress is appended to the 20 chapters in which nuclear detonations are described, the medical effects at Hiroshima and Nagasaki are contrasted with those of nuclear war in 1980s, and the psychological and environmental consequences are analyzed. These chapters provide informative reading, but perhaps the book's most important contribution is its statement about the relevance of medicine to the nuclear arms race.
