    Various radioimmunoassay kits have been developed for measuring the serum free thyroxine (T4) concentration. Values for free T4 obtained with these kits correlate well with values obtained by the more cumbersome and time-consuming method of equilibrium dialysis in patients with thyroid dysfunction and abnormalities in the serum thyroxine-binding globulin concentration (1, 2). However, when some of these kits are used to assess serum free T4 in euthyroid patients with nonthyroidal illnesses, the values may be lower than those obtained with equilibrium dialysis (2-5). These discrepancies may limit the clinical usefulness of these methods in ill, euthyroid patients.
