To the editor: In response to the recent article by Eisenbarth and colleagues (1), we wish to report a similar case of multiple endocrine disturbances with autoimmune features.
Our patient is a 29-year-old white woman with severe insulin-dependent, ketosis-prone diabetes mellitus. Diabetes was originally diagnosed at age 10 years and has been very poorly controlled since. Renal failure developed at age 27 after multiple episodes of pyelonephritis, and she has been on chronic hemodialysis for 6 months. Hypothyroidism was diagnosed at age 10 and treated with supplementation. Secondary amenorrhea began abruptly at age 26 after normal menses at age 17.
