Herpes simplex encephalitis is a much more important disease than its prevalence would otherwise indicate (1, 2). It carries a 70% to 80% mortality in the first 30 days and a 90% mortality by 4 to 6 months (3). Vidarabine, in a dosage of 15 mg/kg per day, given intravenously for 10 days, markedly improves the outcome if administered to the patient early in the course and before the occurrence of coma (2).
