To the editor: In his recent excellent review of the Cushing syndromes in the May 1979 issue Gold (1) corrected the "mistaken generalization" that the clinical features of exogenous Cushing syndrome, produced by administration of glucocorticoids, resemble those of the endogenous syndrome. In support of this point, he mentions that only two of 10 common clinical features occur with equal frequency in both syndromes, these being obesity and mental disorders. However, Gold does not mention that, despite the similarity in frequency, there is great dissimilarity in the characteristics of mental disorders produced by the exogenous and endogenous Cushing syndromes.
