The eighteen sections have been either revised or newly written by a more than doubled list of 79 contributors, all of whom are from Britain.

Information is organized by subject, in contrast to the problem-oriented approach of some North American counterparts; this structural style may not appeal to some readers. The coverage is comprehensive to the point of excess in some cases; examples are such rare and unimportant conditions as glanders
