Phleborheography for Thrombosis

To the editor: Among their results in diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis by the phleborheograph in 75 patients also studied by venography, Bynum and associates (Ann Intern Med 89:162-166, 1978) found a false-negative rate of 31%. This should be examined, since in our series of 228 patients with deep venous thrombosis proven radiographically the gross false-negative rate was 8.2%. Five of our 19 errors were technical or interpretational, and 13 (5.7%) were inherent in the method. All but one clot missed by phleborheography were below the popliteal vein.
