Common colds occur an average of 3.9 times and lead to 1.2 days of restricted activity per person each year in the United States (1). When one adds to this morbidity the losses in productivity, the expenses of "cold remedies," visits to the doctor, and the burden of occasional complications such as sinusitis, then it is apparent that the common cold is a major health problem.

Progress toward control of this illness has been frustratingly slow. In some ways we are little further along than when Pliny the Younger prescribed "kissing the hairy muzzle of a mouse" for colds in
