Persons with hemophilia are at unusually high risk of developing acute viral hepatitis as a result of their need for repeated treatment with blood products. Although less than one fourth of adult hemophiliac patients have a history of acute hepatitis, at least three fourths of them can be shown by serologic tests for the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and antibody (antiHBs) to have been exposed to type B hepatitis (1). Some recent evidence has suggested that chronic hepatitis might also be common in this population (2), a consequence of treatment with blood products that might have been predicted. Prospective
