Scanning for Uremic Pulmonary Calcifications

To the editor: We do not agree with Drs. Conger and Alfrey's reply (Ann Intern Med 84:224-225, 1976) to the proposed value of obtaining ^99mTc-pyrophosphate (^99mTcPP) scans in chronic uremic patients to demonstrate pulmonary calcifications. We have seen two patients who showed diffuse pulmonary parenchymal accumulation of ^99mTcPP with normal chest roentgenographs. There were no predisposing causes for pulmonary calcifications except uremia. Thus our observations support those of Drs. Moinuddin, Rockett, and Weber (Ann Intern Med 84:224, 1976) that ^99mTcP scanning may be of value in finding diffuse pulmonary calcification in uremic patients with normal chest radiographs.
