    To the editor: These are troubled times for our profession. Malpractice claim settlements and insurance rates are rising. There are greater demands from the public for assurances that we police ourselves to assure them competent care. Editors of outstanding journals such as this one should know that their advertisements serve as one form of medical education for many practicioners. Thus, it disturbs me to find advertisements in this journal recommending the use of iron preparations that are supplied in sustained release packages and have added reducing substances to "enhance iron absorption." Most observant physicians and all hematologists, I am sure,
