Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole has been used successfully in the treatment of a nocardial brain abscess (1) and was recently found to be also effective in the treatment of bacterial brain abscess (Ann Intern Med 82:812-813, 1975). During the past year we have had the opportunity of successfully treating five patients with bacterial meningitis with this combination.
The five patients were referred to the Abbassia Fever Hospital, United States Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 meningitis wards because of fever accompanied by severe headache and vomiting not responding to routine therapy. Three patients were drowsy and two were unconscious (Table 1). In every
