During the last few years it has become apparent that immunologic mechanisms are involved in cell and tissue injury in a variety of human diseases. Two immunopathogenic processes have been recognized and well defined in injury to vascular membranes in man and experimental animals. Several studies of diffuse glomerular diseases in man and laboratory animals have helped to clarify these mechanisms. The best evidence of an immunologic pathogenesis in man is available in systemic lupus erythematosus and in Goodpasture's syndrome, where two different immunological processes have been implicated in the damage to the glomerular capillary: circulating antigen-antibody complexes in lupus
