Abstract
After extraction of her teeth, a patient with rheumatic heart disease developed infective endocarditis caused by Streptococcus mutans, an organism known primarily from its association with dental plaque and caries. Streptococcus mutans was microaerophilic and pleomorphic. The infrequency with which it has been associated with endocarditis may be related to the common practice of failing to identify the species of microaerophilic streptococci.
