The paper by Sackett and colleagues (1), in this issue, commendably provides scientific validation of the effectiveness and safety of nurse practitioners in a suburban general practice. Other reports (2, 3) have also favorably evaluated nurse practitioner programs in terms of medical care provided, patient satisfaction, cost, and other aspects. It is important to avoid unwarranted generalizations from those studies. Many different types of new nursing roles are being introduced into clinical practice.
