A recent editorial in this journal (1) reviewed the relatively brief history of carcinoembryonic (CE) antigen and indicated the increasing interest in this glycoprotein and its potential importance in the diagnosis of cancer. It was mentioned that a five-center collaborative study with Dr. Phil Gold and his co-workers at Montreal General Hospital had been undertaken to determine whether their original radioimmunoassay for detecting circulating carcinoembryonic antigen (2) could be duplicated in other laboratories and to assess the diagnostic value of the test. The first results of this project have now been reported (3).
