In this monograph the author presents the view that various aphasic states are caused by interruptions at successive planes in the process of language formation. With this hierarchical scheme, he leads the reader from anomia, through semantic aphasia and Wernicke's aphasia, to Broca's aphasia, postulating that each is caused by some defect in the evolving process of going from memory and cognition to articulation. A breakdown in similar hierarchical systems is proposed for the apraxias and agnosias.
