To the editor: We read with great interest the editorial by Drs. Gordan and Roof, "Humors from Tumors": "Diagnostic Potential of Peptides" (1). Some recent observations from our laboratories seem to be relevant to their comments on the possible molecular characteristics of parathyroid hormone (PTH), secreted ectopically by nonparathyroid neoplasms. They mentioned the possibility, suggested by the work of Berson and Yalow (2), that larger complexes or "primordial big molecules" of peptide hormones may exist and may account for the immunological differences between ectopically secreted hormone and hormone secreted by the endocrine glands.
