Although the issue is still one of controversy and debate, conception and childbearing appear to be decisions best left to individual couples. Unfortunately, most such decisions are not prospective. Most conceptions occur as unplanned consequences of coitus. Despite a radical change in delivery of abortion services in the United States during the past 3 years, contraceptive methods are not universally used by sexually active couples anxious to avoid pregnancy. A recent survey of women seeking abortion in the state of Washington showed that 74% had not been using a contraceptive method at the time of conception.
