In the summer of 1969 it was announced that many of the procedures of the American Board of Internal Medicine were being changed beginning variously in 1970 to 1972 (1). These changes have aroused much interest and no little controversy among internists both in practice and in medical education. The Board therefore believes it wise to explain the reasons and backgrounds for these changes.
