In recent years medicine as it is taught and practiced in the United States has received considerable attention. Many within and without the profession have reviewed its history, listened to its heart sounds, tested its reflexes, diagnosed its areas of health and illness, and offered therapies for its ailments. As a newcomer to the ranks of those who bear some responsibilities for its future, I wish to add my personal views to the mix—if only to be able to decide in that future whether I agree with myself!
