SUMMARY
The components of the U. S. Army Malaria Research Program since its beginning in 1961 are reviewed. A broad basic biology program has been combined with new test systems capable of screening many compounds for new leads that are in turn studied in special systems and exploited by synthesis. The program has developed a successful treatment for clinical disease, a new prophylaxis suitable for use in the field against the drug-resistant forms, a new single agent that alone or in combination is effective against these drug-resistant forms, and a definitive study showing that primaquine will prevent the spread of disease into controlled areas.
