Relative resistance to corticosteroid therapy was observed in some asthmatic patients. The eosinopenic responses to 40 mg cortisol intravenously in 19 unselected asthmatics (group A) and 6 resistant asthmatics (group B) were measured by following changes in total eosinophil counts (TEC). The percent TEC changes were -35, -77, and -73 in group A and -10, -36, and +5 in group B at 2, 4, and 6 hr after administration. These differences were highly significant (P = 0.01) and independent of the base-line TEC.
