The introduction of chlorothiazide (1) as the first really effective oral diuretic has marked the beginning of a new era in the treatment of edematous and hypertensive disorders. The development of this compound (2) thus stands as one of the most significant advances in clinical medicine of the past decade. The use of chlorothiazide and of the many similar compounds subsequently derived from it has undoubtedly resulted in significant to striking symptomatic relief and the prolongation of life of countless numbers of patients suffering from the common medical disorders so often accompanied by fluid accumulation.
