Since the introduction of reliable and relatively permanent external portals into patients' arterial and venous blood systems in 1960 (1), work and experimentation with hemodialysis as a chronic and life-sustaining procedure have expanded rapidly (2-10). Numerous centers are now equipped or are equipping themselves with the required apparatus and have acquainted or are acquainting themselves with the procedures and the problems involved.
During this period of initial expansion of facilities and experimentation, a good deal of concern and anxiety has been expressed on a wide but related range of issues having to do with the feasibility of the procedure and
