During 1963 and 1964, The New England Journal of Medicine took its readers on "a sort of pilgrim's progress through medical care, successively turning attention to medical education, postgraduate training, medical-care facilities, forms of medical practice and then the role of organized medicine, governmental agencies and finally some independent superstructures." The present volume consists of revisions of the papers originally published in that series and several additional contributions, all carefully related by means of an introductory chapter by a social scientist, a closing summary by a physician, and informed editing and grouping.
