An increasingly serious problem for the past decade or more has been the rising prevalence of infections due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pseudomonas bacteremia occurs in elderly, debilitated, and chronically ill patients, in premature infants, in patients treated with ionizing radiation, and in patients suffering from thermal burns. In leukemic and burned patients pseudomonas septicemia is the terminal cause of the majority of deaths.
