During the past decade, newer principles have evolved concerning the postexposure prevention of rabies. A review of the pathogenesis and prevention of rabies was presented in the ANNALS in 1963 (1). In that review, the relative importance of first, prompt local wound care; second, prompt rabies hyperimmune serum therapy; and third, vaccine therapy was discussed.

Since 1963, occasional instances of therapeutic failure of the above regimen have been reported, and are abstracted by Anderson, Daly, and Kidd in this issue of the ANNALS. As these authors state, many reasons can account for such failures. It should be emphasized, however, that
