The American Physiological Society has undertaken the publication of a multi-volume Handbook of Physiology somewhat in the tradition of the great German Handbuchs. It was the intention of the Society to give the Handbook the highest intellectual level attainable by obtaining as Editors of the Sections and authors of the chapters the services of physiologists of very high competence and reputation. The Society has unquestionably accomplished its purpose in Section 3; Respiration, Volume I. The editors, Dr. Wallace O. Fenn and Dr. Hermann Rahn, are distinguished physiologists and have, themselves, been responsible for much of the great advance in the
