In recent years the pendulum of opinion regarding the etiology of atherosclerosis has swung away from the mechanistic view that ingested fat and cholesterol merely find their way through the blood stream to the arterial wall, toward the concept of an underlying metabolic abnormality. Growing evidence suggests than an important and perhaps basic defect is in the area of carbohydrate metabolism.
