The appearance elsewhere in this issue of three papers on chromosome studies in chronic granulocytic leukemia (CGL) has suggested that some sort of stock-taking is in order concerning the present meaningfulness to physicians of this and related kinds of investigation and of some of the possibilities for the future.
A minute chromosome, which eventually came to be known as the Philadelphia chromosome and to be abbreviated Ph1 (1), has been found to be an abnormality characteristic of some of the hematopoietic cells of the great majority of patients with CGL.
