Excerpt

Intermittent peritoneal dialysis provides an alternative method to periodic hemodialysis for maintaining the activity of some persons with chronic renal failure. A number of reports (1-4) are available concerning the successful application of repeated hemodialysis. But most of the information on peritoneal dialysis to date has been obtained from lavage procedures lasting only for periods of hours to a few days (5-8).

Investigations relative to the effect of long-term peritoneal dialysis on the peritoneum, and on the clinical and physiologic responses of the body as a whole, are beginning to be reported (9-15). An opportunity to study this problem was

Addendum

The technique of peritoneal dialysis described has been employed with ten other persons in chronic renal insufficiency for periods of 1 to 3 months. Comparison of the polyvinyl catheter with a similar model made of Silastic* is in progress. Analysis of this data has not been completed.

Summario in Interlingua
