This symposium, in which a number of outstanding clinical investigators participated, ranged widely over the area of intestinal biopsy findings in celiac disease and idiopathic steatorrhea, better known as adult celiac disease. The source of most of the material studied was duodenum or jejunum; thus, the title, Intestinal Biopsy, is somewhat misleading.

The available microscopic techniques—light, electron microscopy, and dissecting—were thoroughly discussed. Of some interest was the evidence present that examination of biopsy material with the dissecting microscope may occasionally be more reliable than that with the light in detecting atrophic changes in the mucosa.
