An outstanding contribution has been made to the field of immunology by workers in New Zealand in the development by Bielschowsky of an inbred strain of mice, the NZB strain. Together with Helyer and Howie, she demonstrated in these mice the spontaneous occurrence of an auto-immune hemolytic anemia that slowly increased in severity as their age advanced. The original observation by these workers of the development of positive direct Coombs tests and positive L E cell tests in these mice has been supported by the extensive studies of Burnet, Holmes, Long, and Gorrie.
