First Case Report of Community-Acquired Pneumonia due to Tsukamurella pulmonis

    Background: Tsukamurella species are gram-positive bacilli rarely cultured from humans. A review of the literature revealed fewer than 20 cases of infection with Tsukamurella species; most of these cases were bacteremia related to central-line infections (1).

    Objective: To report what we believe is the first case of community-acquired pneumonia due to Tsukamurella pulmonis.

    Case Report: A 76-year-old man was admitted with a 4-day history of fever, cough, and dyspnea. His medical history included non-Hodgkin lymphoma (in complete remission) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. His chest radiograph showed right lower-lobe and left hilar infiltrates. The diagnosis was community-acquired pneumonia, and the patient was treated empirically with ceftriaxone.
