We are writing in response to the recent editorial by Childress (1) on how to ethically increase the supply of transplantable organs after cardiocirculatory arrest and compliance with the uniform determination of death. The uniform determination of death relies on irreversible cessation of circulatory and respiratory functions or all functions of the entire brain, including the brain stem, and must be made in accordance with accepted medical standards.
