Bisphosphonates and Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

Woo and colleagues (1) highlight the substantial difference in the risk for osteonecrosis of the jaw between patients with cancer who receive high doses of intravenous bisphosphonates and patients with nonmalignant skeletal disorders who receive considerably lower doses, but their recommendations for managing the disorder do not reflect the difference. Thus, they suggest that all patients starting bisphosphonate therapy undergo a comprehensive dental examination and panoramic and intraoral radiography followed by surgical treatment for “at-risk” teeth.
