    This issue marks an important milestone for Annals. In it, we begin a continuing series of articles intended to help clinicians understand the scientific basis of new developments in diagnosis and treatment of disease (1). We will publish these articles under a distinguished name: Physiology in Medicine. Articles have appeared under this name in three other journals over the years: In The New England Journal of Medicine from 1967 to 1978, in Hospital Practice from 1984 to 1994, and in The American Journal of Medicine from 1997 to 2001. The constant feature during these years was co-sponsorship by the American Physiological Society (APS), which will be our partner in this latest incarnation of Physiology in Medicine.
