Identifying Pneumocystis carinii in Pleural Effusions

IN RESPONSE:
The patient described by Dr. Ruskin should be viewed in the perspective of other extrapulmonary foci of Pneumocystis carinii that have included pleural-based masses, pleural effusions, and ascites [1]. Although P. carinii and Toxoplasma gondii [2] have been seen on routine cytopathologic analysis of pleural fluid, no diagnosis in our series was made cytopathologically.
