General Internal Medicine and General Internists: Recognizing a National Need

General internists make important contributions throughout the U.S. health care system—in hospitals, in the office and clinic, in referral care—and they are the largest pool for primary care physicians of any developed country. Approximately one third of U.S. physicians designate themselves as general internists, family or general practitioners, or pediatricians, whereas in Canada about half of physicians are generalists and in Great Britain two thirds are generalists. Thus, the need for more general internists in the United States is of major concern.
