    Last year when I was invited to give the eleventh David Rabin Memorial Lecture at Vanderbilt Medical Center, I was puzzled by their selection, but the more I learned about Dr. Rabin, the clearer their reasons for inviting me became. Dr. Rabin, a renowned endocrinologist, was stricken by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 1979 at the age of 45 years. Although the illness eventually took his life, it never took away his determination or his dignity. When the illness made it difficult for him to walk, he used a cane and came to work.
