Sports medicine is thought by many to be the domain of the orthopedist, but the internist can play a role as well. In our medical practice, for example, the physicians provide medical care for the Atlanta Braves, screen Georgia Tech's football and basketball players for underlying cardiovascular and general medical problems, provide medical services for Special Olympians and see a spectrum of athletes in the office for medical problems ranging from exercise-induced asthma (1) to postexertional hematuria (2).
