    The Uncertainty of Housestaff Disputes about the incident flourished throughout the hospital for months. The personalities of those involved quickly became less important than the race and group they represented. Simplifying failed to clarify, however, and discussions about race, in particular, were awkward and inconclusive.

    The housestaff were of multiple races and backgrounds. For most, choosing to train in an inner city public hospital reflected what we thought was a deep sense of purpose. Our feelings about being physicians were to grow more complex, however, not least because the community's unresolved problems battered and wearied us. The ER incident
