    To the Editors: The first-generation enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for hepatitis C virus (HCV), which detects antibodies against c-100 antigen, is positive in about 70% (1) and 75% (2) of patients with acute and chronic non-A, non-B hepatitis, respectively. Furthermore, using this assay, antibody detection in patients with acute non-A, non-B hepatitis is considerably delayed (3).

    Recently, a second-generation ELISA was developed; it incorporates one antigen from the nonstructural NS3 and NS4 regions (c200) and a HCV-core-associated antigen (c22-3).
