To the Editors: Hayward and Shapiro (1) recently reported the results of a national study of AIDS and residency training. The results of our recent survey support some of their findings. Internal medicine housestafif from seven university hospitals were surveyed to evaluate the effect of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on their education, stress, and infection control practices. The centers were located in areas with high, moderate, and low prevalences of AIDS in New York, California, Florida, Ohio, Nebraska, West Virginia, and South Dakota.
