Avi, a strapping young man of 26, came in to see me one morning. Exuding good nature and engaging self-confidence, he said that he was within a few weeks of completing a course of electrical engineering at a technician's level. He then confided that, over the past four months, he had the feeling something was going on inside his head. It was difficult for him to be more explicit but my own interpretation of his complaint, after repeated questioning, was that some component of his sense of balance had gone awry.
