Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy potentially offers advantages as a treatment in selected patients with biliary tract stone disease. Representatives of the following eight professional societies (listed alphabetically) have prepared recommendations for training in gallstone lithotripsy: the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American College of Radiology, the American College of Surgeons, the American Lithotripsy Society, and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. Developed through a consensus process, the recommendations are based on data compiled from replies to a questionnaire about lithotripsy
