To the Editor: Visceral leishmaniasis in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is being reported frequently in the Spanish media (1-3). Berenguer and colleagues (4) recently reported nine patients with visceral leishmaniasis and HIV infection. All had fever or visceromegaly or both. Six of the patients had very low or absent antileishmanial antibody titers and no microscopic evidence of leishmania amastigotes were found, but in all cases Leishmania species were cultured. Isoenzyme analysis identified four isolates as Leishmania donovani infantum but no subsequent enzyme classification of these species is referred.
