Sudden cardiac death accounts for 400 000 to 600 000 deaths each year in the United States, and these numbers have not improved despite the many advances in cardiology. Unfortunately, most cases of sudden cardiac death occur out of the hospital and only a small number of patients survive to be admitted to a hospital (1). In a study of 352 patients, Myerberg and coworkers (2) reported that 33% of patients with an out-of-hospital arrest were admitted to a hospital, but only 19% were subsequently discharged.
